Beginners

Monday Nights, 7pm-8pm, Rivets Social Club, Aylesbury
(for Beginners and Improvers)

We are a friendly running club based in Aylesbury. Our clubhouse is at Rivet Sports & Social Club not far from the town centre. We are a growing club with over 180 members and are always pleased to welcome new members.

Running groups meet most nights of the week and on Sundays but Monday nights are dedicated to beginners and improvers. We pride ourselves on being open and welcoming to new members of all ages and abilities - from those that have never run before to experienced marathon runners. We run because we love running, want to stay fit and enjoy running with others.

A running club is a good place to learn and be motivated about running. Several members, who had never really run before joining the club have gone on to run marathons, which they said they'd never dreamed of doing but were inspired by the enthusiasm and encouragement of new friends in the club.

Monday night training starts at 7 p.m. at Rivets and is led by Monika, our Ladies Captain and is designed for those new to running or those who haven't run for a while and want to get back into it. Read about the experience of other beginners who started on Monday Nights

Starting Out

Your footwear is by far the most important thing to think about for running. To start running any distance; you need a comfortable, well-fitting, not-too-old pair of trainers. And if you enjoy running and want to continue; you need to think about buying a new pair of good quality running footwear.
For some, the first question to ask is - What shall I wear? Well, the clothes are not too important when you are starting out. You don't need the latest branded Lycra, you just need comfortable clothing, such as t-shirt and joggers. You will get hot, so easy-to-peel and tie around your waist tops are good. And for safety a reflective top is a good idea, but not essential to start off.

  • A comfortable, well-fitting pair of trainers
  • Comfortable jogging trousers, t-shirt, lightweight jacket/fleece (not too many layers)
  • A reflective top, if you have one

    Monday night Groups

    Group 1 = approx 3 miles, run/walk
    Group 2 = approx 3-5 miles, slow run, plenty of regrouping.
    Alternating each week between running and efforts, ie hill/speed/fitness training.
    Group 3 = approx 4-6 miles, a little faster than group 2, plenty of regrouping.
    Again, alternating each week between a loop run and efforts.
    One thing we always like to say is that it's your run, and you set the pace.

    Monday Night Summary

    1. Aimed at men/women aged 15+. Complete beginners to improvers.
    2. Rivets, Mondays starting 7pm.
    3. Aim: weight loss, fitness, social, and for those who always fancied running but 'never got round to it'.
    4. Wear something comfy, ie tracksuit and trainers and preferably something hi-viz, but not essential, as we'll be sticking to the main road at first.

    What next?

    Come and meet us and bring your running kit to one of our Monday Night sessions at Rivets at 7 p.m. There is no charge. You can run with us for two weeks to see if you like us before making your decision on whether you would like to join us.
